In Chá de Magoma, Mozambique, the average life expectancy is just 54.6 years.
For the 10,000 residents of this rural tea-growing community, access to basic diagnostic healthcare is limited or nonexistent. Without proper laboratory equipment or trained personnel, illnesses such as malaria, anemia, typhoid, AIDS, and chronic disease often go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Treatable conditions become life-threatening simply because the tools to detect them are not available.
The problem is not just the absence of a clinic building. The problem is the absence of diagnostic capacity — the equipment and training required to accurately identify disease and initiate appropriate treatment. Without testing, healthcare providers are forced to rely on symptoms alone. Without pathology services, early intervention is nearly impossible. The result is preventable suffering, shortened life expectancy, and ongoing strain on families who must travel long distances seeking care.
Metro Bethesda Rotary, serving as the international partner to the Rotary Club of Beira, along with mission driven entrepreneurs Seth Goldman and Chef Spike Mendelsohn of Just Ice Tea, committed to addressing this urgent gap. Rather than providing short-term aid, the team focused on a sustainable solution: equipping the existing clinic in Chá de Magoma with the proper pathology tools and training necessary to diagnose and treat critical illnesses locally.
This initiative is part of a $115,000+ fundraising effort to transform the clinic into a functioning diagnostic hub serving not only tea garden workers and their families, but also surrounding communities.
In October 2025, Metro Bethesda Rotary mobilized its local community through a major fundraising event in Washington, DC. With the support of Seth Goldman and Chef Spike Mendelsohn, the team raised over $25,000 in a single evening to advance the project.
Several other clubs have made significant contributions, including:
- Charlotte Hall Rotary Club
- Washington, DC Rotary Club
- Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rotary Club
- Izmir-Gundogdu Rotary Club
- Istanbul Rotary Club
Once the project is completed, the impact will be measurable and ongoing:
- Increased access to accurate diagnosis for malaria, anemia, typhoid, AIDS, and other critical illnesses
- Reduced need for long-distance travel for medical testing
- Strengthened local healthcare workforce through equipment and training
- Potential long-term improvement in life expectancy
- Sustainable infrastructure investment benefiting 10,000+ residents
By strengthening local diagnostic capacity, this project empowers healthcare providers to detect disease earlier, treat patients more effectively, and reduce preventable mortality.
Currently, preparations underway at the site of the clinic with funding from other sources. We are awaiting final approval from Rotary International to move ahead with equipment purchase and installation.
This is Rotary as People of Action — responding not only to a visible need, but to a systemic barrier preventing healthier futures. This is Rotary at its best: turning compassion into capacity and urgency into action.
